Courseware in academic library user education: a literature review from the GAELS Joint Electronic Library project
The use of courseware for information skills teaching in academic libraries has been growing for a number of years. The GAELS project was required to create a set of learning materials to support Joint Electronic Library activity at Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities and conducted a literature review of the subject. This review discovered a range of factors common to successful library courseware implementations, such as the need for practitioners to feel a sense of ownership of the medium, a need for courseware customization to local information environments, and an emphasis on training packages for large bodies of undergraduates. However, we also noted underdeveloped aspects worthy of further attention, such as treatment of pedagogic issues in library CAL implementations and use of hypertextual learning materials for more advanced information skills training. We suggest ways of improving library teaching practice and further areas of research
GAELS Project Final Report: Information environment for engineering
The GAELS project was a collaboration commenced in 1999 between Glasgow University Library and Strathclyde University Library with two main aims:· to develop collaborative information services in support of engineering research at the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde· to develop a CAL (computer-aided learning package) package in advanced information skills for engineering research students and staff The project was funded by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council (SHEFC) from their Strategic Change Initiative funding stream, and funding was awarded initially for one year, with an extension of the grant for a further year. The project ended in June 2001.The funding from SHEFC paid for two research assistants, one based at Glasgow University Library working on collaborative information services and one based at Strathclyde University Library developing courseware. Latterly, after these two research assistants left to take up other posts, there has been a single researcher based at Glasgow University Library.The project was funded to investigate the feasibility of new services to the Engineering Faculties at both Universities, with a view to making recommendations for service provision that can be developed for other subject areas
Adequate Protection- The Equitable Yardstick of Chapter 11
A debtor who files a petition for relief under the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978 (the Code) triggers the automatic stay provisions of the Code. The automatic stay precludes creditors from enforcing their rights in the collateral pending further order of the Bankruptcy Court. An issue which has spurred continued controversy is whether undersecured creditors who are stayed from repossessing their collateral are entitled to compensation for the delay in enforcing their rights in the collateral. It is agreed that the concept of adequate protection provides for the preservation of the value of the collateral due to its use, depreciation, or age. However, the Circuit Courts of Appeals are not in accord in determining whether an undersecured creditor should be compensated for more than the collateral\u27s depreciation. This circuit court split has to some extent been resolved by the recent United States Supreme Court opinion affirming a Fifth Circuit decision finding that an undersecured creditor is not entitled to compensation for the delay caused by the automatic stay in foreclosing on the collateral
Stabilization and precise calibration of a continuous-wave difference frequency spectrometer by use of a simple transfer cavity
A novel, simple, and inexpensive calibration scheme for a continuous-wave difference frequency spectrometer is presented, based on the stabilization of an open transfer cavity by locking onto the output of a polarization stabilized HeNe laser. High frequency, acoustic fluctuations of the transfer cavity length are compensated with a piezoelectric transducer mounted mirror, while long term drift in cavity length is controlled by thermal feedback. A single mode Ar+ laser, used with a single mode ring dye laser in the difference frequency generation of 2–4 µm light, is then locked onto a suitable fringe of this stable cavity, achieving a very small long term drift and furthermore reducing the free running Ar+ linewidth to about 1 MHz. The dye laser scan provides tunability in the difference frequency mixing process, and is calibrated by marker fringes with the same stable cavity. Due to the absolute stability of the marker cavity, precise frequency determination of near infrared molecular transitions is achieved via interpolation between these marker fringes. It is shown theoretically that the residual error of this scheme due to the dispersion of air in the transfer cavity is quite small, and experimentally that a frequency precision on the order of 1 MHz per hour is routinely obtained with respect to molecular transitions. Noether Currents of Charged Spherical Black Holes
We calculate the Noether currents and charges for Einstein-Maxwell theory
using a version of the Wald approach. In spherical symmetry, the choice of time
can be taken as the Kodama vector. For the static case, the resulting combined
Einstein-Maxwell charge is just the mass of the black hole. Using either a
classically defined entropy or the Iyer-Wald selection rules, the entropy is
found to be just a quarter of the area of the trapping horizon. We propose
identifying the combined Noether charge as an energy associated with the Kodama
time. For the extremal black hole case, we discuss the problem of Wald's
rescaling of the surface gravity to define the entropy.Comment: 4 page
